AKERA provides artists, scholars, educators and other creative professionals with time, space and the opportunity to live and create site specific work inspired by their total immersion experience in this natural environment of 123 acres of majestic foothills of the Catskills Mountains, including serene forests, rolling meadows, babbling waters, horizon views with both sunrises and sunsets, and diverse wildlife.
Our story is a collective story.
Inspired by the ever-flowing earth, we offer AKERA as an evolving art space. We invite artists to approach AKERA as an art-space somewhere between medium and museum. AKERA is an ever-evolving intergenerational retreat center, an interactive playground for dreamers, or an unbridled canvas for the creatives, designed to immerse us in the enchantment of the majesty of our surroundings and leave us elevated by our experience.
Our guests honor AKERA with their presence and will not leave without having made a unique contribution. It’s been said that magic cannot be made, it can only be invited. AKERA is designed to create a space that invites magic and inspiration.
So, if you too are hungry for something different, with a nod to elegance, quality, which pushes boundaries and opens portals, with a new level of detail creating this unique custom-tailored bespoke AKERA experience, you have come to the right place.
Residency Environmental (or Earthworks) Art Program – REAP
REAP is designed for people who want to explore new ways of thinking, creating, being, and contributing. Live here on the land, in a private country room in shared accommodations, making AKERA your hundred-acre studio to create in big, lasting ways. AKERA integrates every object, every human, and every action into one large participator work of art. The work created through this program, either individually or collectively, allows visitors to experience nature in new and exciting ways while enhancing awareness to our mission to connect (from the interior to the exterior) to themselves, others, and nature. Residents are challenged to establish deep connections to the natural world and raise awareness around the problems facing our environment and world we are a part of, providing inspiration for discovering opportunities for overcoming these issues.
AKERA deeply believes in the crucial role that the arts play in shaping lasting change and the future health and overall well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. Art can provide hope and inspiration to the challenges by discovering opportunities for overcoming them. Residents will be challenged to bridge the gap between where they are now and what’s next. Residents will be invited out of their element and challenged to expand, becoming receptive and opening up to greater discoveries of self, community, and their part in this world. You are invited to view this as an opportunity to create in a way you may have only dreamt possible. Our skilled art fabricators are here to help make your dreams a reality.
Live Exchange Appreciation Program – LEAP
LEAP is designed to help you reset and reimagine, explore, heal, and learn about yourself — all while working in service to the community. Explore new ways of thinking and being while of service to the visitors of AKERA. In exchange for a place to stay, you'll spend 30 hours per week working at AKERA for the community’s betterment. AKERA provides space for both ends of the spectrum from warmth of appearance and connection to the clarity of solidarity and meditation.
What if you had more time and space to push the boundaries of what is possible? Maybe you’re feeling stuck in the discomforts of wanting a change. Maybe you’re unsure how to take those first steps to kick off the next chapter, or perhaps you’re seeking something different? Perhaps you’re going through a turning point, or you have curiosities to explore within the safety of a place like AKERA.
Successful transitions lead to new beginnings and transformation — of who we are and where we are heading. The final phase of a successful transition is reveling, where we celebrate what we’ve discovered and honor the hard work it’s taken to get here. This is a time for gratitude for what the transition made possible and what new beginning we have arrived at.
